What are the Suttas?

Buddhist suttas are the authentic discourses of the Buddha. They are the primary source of information about the Buddha’s teachings. The suttas were originally transmitted orally but were eventually written down. There are over 10,000 suttas in the Pali Canon, the sacred texts of Theravada Buddhism.

The suttas are divided into four main collections:

  • The Digha Nikaya (Long Discourses)
  • The Majjhima Nikaya (Medium-Length Discourses)
  • The Samyutta Nikaya (Connected Discourses)
  • The Anguttara Nikaya (Numerical Discourses)
  • The Kuddhaka Nikaya (Short discourses)

The suttas cover many topics, including the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the nature of reality. They are a rich source of wisdom and guidance for those who seek to understand and follow the Buddha’s teachings.

Here are some of the most famous suttas:

  • The Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion)
  • The Anapanasati Sutta (The Mindfulness of Breathing)
  • The Metta Sutta (The Discourse on Loving-Kindness)
  • The Brahmavihara Sutta (The Four Immeasurables)

The suttas are a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning about Buddhism. They can be read and studied for inspiration, guidance, and wisdom.
